Timing, space, use and affordability - were some of the considerations for this couple and their pool purchase.
David and Helen installed a pool when the timing was right for them – they had teenage children, adequate backyard space and live in a warm climate.
The result: The pool provided recreation for the whole family and became a social gathering spot for their teens, offering welcome relief during hot summer days. They had solar heating installed to extend the swimming season.
David describes how it was,
“…a very positive escapism from the daily grind.”
For the children, it provided much enjoyment and a place to socialise with their friends.
As the children grew older and moved out, and relocation and retirement was on the cards, a pool for their new move was not a priority.
With the ongoing maintenance of a pool,
“ …[you] began to ask whether it was really worth it. Plus lot’s of downtime with winter.”
The maintenance, David describes having to regularly check the water quality, check if pool treatments were in stock, clean the pool and skimmer boxes, leaves and droppings after wildlife visits; with the next step to contract out.

David describes how the perspective and needs changed for each situation.
“Before installing - [it’s] a case of wanting what you don’t have (be careful what you wish for).
In having the pool, David and Helen reflected on how there is a loss of the yard space for a portion of the year, when it’s not being used.
For David and Helen, it didn’t take away the value of the pool, in regards to both the aesthetics and functionality for the time they had it. Robert discussed however that it can still be an opportunity cost.
For the property price and when it came to sell, David and Helen they believed that it had,
“Zero impact on price.”
Although it may have added to the initial overall appeal, for the ultimate buyers, David and Helen felt it did not make a difference to their criteria or the sale price. The location of the property itself being the main reason for the buyer’s purchase.
David and Helen are now in a different location and without a private pool, but access to an ocean pool.
For their current situation, they describe how this now meets their needs.
“Retired now with a free ocean pool - incomparable!”
